Analysis Of A Little Piece Of Ground - 810 Words
Do we need to hear both sides of the story? The novel A Little Piece of Ground by Elizabeth Laird tells the story of the Palestinian, Israeli war from a childââ¬â¢s perspective. The title of the story is a metaphor for the Palestinians hope for their own piece of ground which is represented by a soccer field. The novel tells of the social and political injustice of children living in conflict zones. Whilst the novel provides the reader with a compelling story it has a major flaw that it portrays the Palestinians as victims and the Israelis as hostile. Consequently, A Little Piece of Ground does not provide a balanced and unbiased argument of the Israeli, Palestinian conflict. Readers may not know the history of the Palestinian andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Throughout the novel A Little Piece of Ground, Elizabeth Laird uses descriptive imagery to ensure that we sympathise with the Palestinians. An example of this is evidenced when Laird describes ââ¬Å"Karim was trembling violently. he felt sick with a backwash of fear. I hate them, I hate them, I hate them, I hate them he thought. unable to look at his father who stood still, reduced to an object of ridicule.â⬠(2003, Boycott News). Childrenââ¬â¢s author, Ann Jungman a member, of the liberal Jews for justice in Palestine group says that she admired the book but still found it biased. Jungman said ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s not what is in here that I object to. it is what has been left out. there shouldââ¬â¢ve been a broader pictureâ⬠¦ as all Palestinians are reasonable and all Israelis are monsters.â⬠(2003, Boycott News) Elizabeth Laird has a responsibility to present a balanced view to her readers. especially, as her target audience are young adult readers aged 11-14 who are easily influenced by what they read. Linda Silver a childrenââ¬â¢s book critic explains that one of her major criticisms of the novel is that ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s as though the Israelis are invaders from out of space who are motivated by the malicious desire to make peopleââ¬â¢s lives miserable.â⬠she says they the Israelis are portrayed as mindless killing machines.
