Modernism and Ball Turret Gunner Essay Example for Free
Modernism and Ball Turret Gunner Essay In this poem it says at the start everything is gold or perfect then it goes away in the end which has loss of faith. It is rejecting Eden as a hero and who is flawed. ââ¬Å"The Life You Save May Be Your Ownâ⬠is modernism because a guy shows up, asks for work, takes the truck, and leaves the blind girl he married at a restaurant. This shows how a human mind can work in an evil way. He took the old ladies blind daughter that has never left home before and she loves her daughter and never wanted her to leave home but the strange man took her and left her all by herself. There is no hero in this story. The old lady didnââ¬â¢t do much to be a hero and neither did the blind girl. The strange man was the opposite of a hero, was greedy, and selfish by taking the car and leaving after he repaired it. ââ¬Å" The Death of the Ball Turret Gunnerâ⬠is a contemporary work because it comments on itself by saying, ââ¬Å"When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hosesâ⬠. This poem has multiple meanings. One meaning is that he is in his momââ¬â¢s stomach. The second meaning is him in the ball turret of a B-17 airplane. This is very personal. He got killed fighting for his country and they sprayed him out with a hose and didnââ¬â¢t give him the proper burial and respect. Night is also a contemporary work because it is very personal. He was put in a death camp for many years treated like crap because he was jewish. They barely fed the prisoners so they starved and died. They would also kill them with gas and work them to death. He talks about the past with no fear so everyone knows what happened in the past. The whole story is commenting on itself by explaining what happened at those death camps. Some of these stories and poems are modernist and contemporary works. Whether is in our past or present its still important. The works have many meanings and people enjoy reading them for the meaning of it not just to be entertained by the story but the true meaning of it. Poems and short stories have made a big impact in education and the way society is. Many people love poems and short stories but other people can hate them. I donââ¬â¢t like them my self but they still are important in education and for our future world.

The Scramble for Africa Essay -- World History
The Scramble for Africa is one of the best examples of colonization in world history. Europe alone managed to colonize the entire African continent in a period of roughly twenty five years, spanning from 1875 to 1900. The quest for power by European nations was only one of the driving forces for this race for colonization. The geographical location and the natural resources to be exploited in certain regions of the continent were important factors in the race for land. Another factor that contributed to the colonization of Africa was the end of the slave trade. The need for new capitalism to exist between Europe and Africa after the call for the abolition of slavery became great. European traders were searching for new avenues for making money, as well as new ways to exploit of the natives of Africa, due to their perceived weakness as a people, made the quest for occupation relentless by European nations. Political, economical and social ambitions all led Europe to partition Africa i nto separate colonies and the race to see what country could establish a monopoly in Africa became a European obsession. There is a consensus among historians that the political Scramble for Africa was begun by King Leopold of Belgium. King Leopold had been a supporter of Henry Stanley, a Welsh journalist and explorer of Africa. In the late 1870s, Stanley had been on another expedition to the Africa, mapping the Congo River from its origins to the ocean. Leopold had developed an interest in the Congo region in Africa. He sent Stanley as his private envoy of his International African Association in an effort to establish a foothold in the Congo region. Leopold had not been forthcoming in his intentions to Stanley. He led Stanley to believe it was his ... ... the continent of Africa resulted in millions of deaths, from mistreatment to disease to outright warfare waged against them. In many regions, the European countries raped the land of its nature resource with little concern for the land or the people who lived on the land. Although their were some positive improvements such as better transportation and healthcare, African cultures were destroyed and lives were lost in the process of European colonization. Eriksonââ¬â¢s Timeline Essay
According to Erikson, there are eight stages of life. They are infancy, early childhood, childhood (play age), childhood (school age), adolescents and young adulthood. I just turned 34 this month and I know psychologically that I am in the adulthood portion of my life. Over the years I have caught myself asking questions like; who am I? And how do I fit myself into society? I would say over 10 years ago I began the sixth stage of my life, intimacy versus isolation. When I finished high school I thought I found that special person until I noticed that we became different people. I wanted more out of someone to be able to date and be able to fall in love with the right person. The relationship between the two stages is complex and many people define themselves through intimate relationships with others; and other proper sequence of the stages can be reversed in many people. Woman in the society traditionally exemplified a merging of intimacy and identify issues such as woman identify b eing defined by her intimate relationships. Sometimes it can be hard to separate the differences between the development of intimate relationships and adult itself. Erikson believes that a person is unable to be truly intimate with others until he or she has made progress with addressing their own identity. Marciaââ¬â¢s, the researcher for identity status, developed a similar idea with addressing their own identity. Macias also developed an idea designed to determine the quality of intimacy in a personââ¬â¢s life. A person answered several questions about dating, friendship, and interpersonal he or she commitments may be classified into four categories; Intimate-works at developing mutual personal relationships, has several close friends, involved in a committed love relationship, and is able to express both affectionate and angry feelings in the relationship. Pre-intimate- is a person who has dated but is involved in a committed love relationship, is aware of the possibilities of relating intimately with others, and feels conflicted about commitment and love relationships. Stereotyped- constricted and immature person who has not gone beyond superficial dating relationships, has several friends but they lack significant depth, and he/she dates regularly but does not get involved. Isolated- lacks endurance personal relationships, rarely dates and the person tend to be anxious and immature lacking assertiveness and social skills. If I were to do a test on myself I would say that I am a very mature person who knows what she wants in life because when I am with a person I am very committed and try my hardest to make things work. I would never cheat or do anything to hurt the person that I am with. I donââ¬â¢t have any problems expressing my feelings to my partner. I have a friend who refuses to be in a relationship. I feel that she still has a lot of growing up to do and she enjoys playing with other peopleââ¬â¢s feelings. These people donââ¬â¢t know what love is yet and might not ever open that page for someone else. As for me I know what love is and what it takes to have a good solid relationship. Analysis Of A Little Piece Of Ground - 810 Words
Do we need to hear both sides of the story? The novel A Little Piece of Ground by Elizabeth Laird tells the story of the Palestinian, Israeli war from a childââ¬â¢s perspective. The title of the story is a metaphor for the Palestinians hope for their own piece of ground which is represented by a soccer field. The novel tells of the social and political injustice of children living in conflict zones. Whilst the novel provides the reader with a compelling story it has a major flaw that it portrays the Palestinians as victims and the Israelis as hostile. Consequently, A Little Piece of Ground does not provide a balanced and unbiased argument of the Israeli, Palestinian conflict. Readers may not know the history of the Palestinian andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Throughout the novel A Little Piece of Ground, Elizabeth Laird uses descriptive imagery to ensure that we sympathise with the Palestinians. An example of this is evidenced when Laird describes ââ¬Å"Karim was trembling violently. he felt sick with a backwash of fear. Childrenââ¬â¢s author, Ann Jungman a member, of the liberal Jews for justice in Palestine group says that she admired the book but still found it biased. Jungman said ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s not what is in here that I object to. it is what has been left out. there shouldââ¬â¢ve been a broader pictureâ⬠¦ as all Palestinians are reasonable and all Israelis are monsters.â⬠(2003, Boycott News) Elizabeth Laird has a responsibility to present a balanced view to her readers. especially, as her target audience are young adult readers aged 11-14 who are easily influenced by what they read. Linda Silver a childrenââ¬â¢s book critic explains that one of her major criticisms of the novel is that ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s as though the Israelis are invaders from out of space who are motivated by the malicious desire to make peopleââ¬â¢s lives miserable.â⬠she says they the Israelis are portrayed as mindless killing machines.
